He didn’t have to leave his comfort zone, but he did anyway.
His feet dangled momentarily over the edge. His lips curled upwards slightly and his eyes locked onto this vision of more. He heard his name calling him from over the edge. His heart wanted to leap right out of his chest. His curiosity outweighed his fear. He wanted to leave what he knew for what he believed could be much more.
He wanted to go.
He had to go.
Oh he heard the voices of his concerned, rationally-thinking friends telling him to stay. This voyage of raw faith was too different for them to fully digest. His faith made his friends uncomfortable, suddenly forcing them to look at their lives in a new way. Change is hard. Change is rarely received with open arms and encouragement. Yet against the warnings of others, he felt led to go.
He had to go into the storm to reach his goal.
Something inside him yearned for more. He saw exactly where he knew he needed to be. Against all odds, he firmly planted his feet on the rolling waves. Faith leads us to conquer the impossible. Faith leads us to walk where others sink. Faith is dangerous if we don’t prepare properly.
In Mathew chapter 14,
Peter walked on water in the midst of a raging storm. Why? Because he was called by Jesus to leave his comfort zone. Peter believed even when those closest to him doubted. Peter dared to go for his desire for more, even if it was surrounded by whirling wind, rumbling waves and pouring rain.
Peter knew he was called.
Peter knew he was not alone.
Peter felt fully alive.
Do you have that yearning for more that is drawing you closer to the boat’s edge in your life?
Are you fighting that awkward feeling that you must go after your goal, regardless of the unknown?
Do you feel completely alone?
Before you step out of the boat, it’s important to be prepared. Here are a few lessons we can learn from Peter when SURVIVORS decide to chase after their quest for more and live as THRIVERS.
3 Warning (For Thrivers Only!) What You Need To Do BEFORE Chasing After Your Dreams!
Don’t ask God to call you out if you are not ready to go. Peter asked Jesus to call him out onto the water. Was Peter shocked by Jesus’ response? How long did it take Peter to actually crawl out of the boat? Jesus called. Peter moved. That’s exactly what we need to do. So many times we go to God in prayer for “open doors” of opportunity, only to be thrown off course when the door suddenly flings open. Be prepared for God to work. Do you need to save up finances? Is there research that needs completed in advance? What steps do you need to take right now to be prepared for His call?
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15)
Gather your “Border Busters.”
In the book, “The Dream-Giver” Bruce Wilkinson
describes how we need people in our lives that help get us past the initial hurdles that prevent us from reaching our big dreams. Out of love, those closest to us try to protect us from adventuring beyond what is known, comfortable and understood. Who do you have in your life right now that can encourage you to take the initial steps torwards your goal? Do you have a “boarder buster”? The Dream-Giver is a must read for anyone setting out on this journey!
“The single best way to develop leaders . . . is to take people out of their safe environment and away from the people they know, and throw them into a new arena they know little about. Way over their head, preferably. In fact, the more demanding their challenges, the more pressure and risk they face, the more likely a dynamic leader will emerge.”
― Bruce H. Wilkinson, The Dream Giver: Following Your God-Given Destiny
Expect the storms. Leaving the comfort of your everyday routine to try something different is hard enough as it is. We tend to forget about the storms awaiting our journey. The dark clouds of failed attempts, loneliness, financial difficulties, relationship crisis, pressures at work and even our own low self-esteem are just enough to send us sinking and our goals disappearing. We need God. Some of these storms will force us to mis-step, lose our focus and feel completely overwhelmed. Storms thunder lies into our hearts that we are truly alone, defeated and worthless. The storms are real.
Our dreams are real.
Our God is real, living and actively engaged through the Holy Spirit lighting the way through our darkest storms. Our God does not make mistakes! He is with you in the midst of your storm today. This is not your end, but the beginning of something new. It’s Christ holding you up on the waters.
we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed (2 Corinthians 4:8)
