Ready To Walk On Water?

I love Peter's experience of walking on the roaring sea with Jesus. But the thing is, Peter's story is often misunderstood. Do you have a step you need to take?

Listen to this message I gave at a women's retreat to gain the fresh perspective you need to see Jesus in a new way! My FREE gift to you!

He Whispers “Come” Not “Run”

I was gearing-up excitement for my 25th birthday. Turning a quarter of a century old, in my mind, deserved a special celebration. A thrill of a lifetime. A moment I would relive for the next 25 years…

As my husband and I drove up to the skydiving parking lot, my internal craving for adventure kicked-in high gear. Oh my brave husband? He videotaped the entire adventure…from the ground.

Although I signed-up for the solo jump, the instructor had his obvious objections. With his head to toe glance, I’m not exactly sure which red flag shouted out first…my hearing-aid, my vision-loss or my short right arm (all conveniently packaged into one bundle of joy). It was ruled almost immediately that I would have a difficult time disembarking the plane without fully being able to hear the countdown and push myself out of the plane.

Time to get real – I had planned for this moment. Silently lying awake at night, I could feel the wind rushing through my body, seeing the clouds hug me from every side, weightlessly floating above my troubles and completely free. I wanted to experience just a few daring minutes of pure freedom and skydiving, I strangely thought, would be the very ticket I needed.

Have you ever longed to experience what it feels like to be able to breathe in the fullness of peace, security, confidence and meaning? Sure, we have all been there. We escape by running away from our Abba, instead of simply coming into His embrace.

You run.

I run…ahem…or skydive…

He simply waits for us, patiently, whispering this promise:

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 NLT)

That need for freedom we crave is the very candle burning at midnight that will guide us to our Abba. You see, we will never be able to top His offer. Our running will always come up empty. Our coming to Him will always bring us the rest our soul longs for.

What are you running for today? What are you running from today? Have you allowed Him to cradle you in His arms and hold you, if only for a moment, and breathe life into your soul? Here is a hint – before you start running anywhere else…stop. Make His promise your prayer today:

Abba, I  am coming to You right now. I feel so weary and carry heavy burdens (list those burdens here). Abba Daddy, I need Your rest. I am in Your Word and learning how to apply Your Truth – Your yoke. Teach me, because I know You are humble and gentle at heart and I believe I will find rest for my soul in You alone. For Your yoke (Truth) is easy to bear, and the burden You give me is freedom.” (Based on Matthew 11:28-30 NLT)

…And a side note…I did swallow my fear in the clouds that day. I was offered a tandem jump (if you saw the guy I was paired with, you would have agreed too). After practicing on the ground, we jumped to freedom that day as I left my hearing-aid and glasses on the ground below. As we splashed safely into the only 1-inch puddle in the mile-wide landing field that day, I learned how badly I jumped at this experience. As soon as my hearing-aid was working I asked my diving buddy why he seemed to be squirming a bit on our way down. His response, “Sorry. I’ve been doing this for 15 years and you were the first person – EVER – to push both of us off…on count 2…not 3! You scared me to death!”

Don’t be too eager to jump, that you fail to miss His embrace. Here’s hoping you find rest as He whispers over you today.

Love your journey and I’m so thankful I subscribed! You are an inspiration and I am encouraged to draw close to my Father every time I read. Thank you for being vulnerable and letting others into your life. You are a blessing to many and a cherished child of the King.

Powerful encouragement you posted there Heather! I’m learning that the more I share, the more friends I make in the process. I went through most of my life thinking I was the only one with feelings of doubt, frustration, disappointment…and the list goes on. I think that keeps us from sharing. Yet our story could be the very words that could offer another hope. That’s why I write…just passing hope along. :). Great connecting with you!

Your approach to life is refreshing on one level and scary on the next! 🙂 But if you follow that voice inside from God before you jump, chances are your landing will be soft or at least cushioned! 🙂 No skydiving until your boys are grown up! 😉 HUGS!

    Mary –
If it makes you feel any better, my one and only skydive was before kids :). I don’t think I’ll be doing it again anytime soon!

This is like the Hebrews scripture I’m freaking on right now on my blog…. approach the throne of God, not run….love the connection.
