I love Peter's experience of walking on the roaring sea with Jesus. But the thing is, Peter's story is often misunderstood. Do you have a step you need to take?
Listen to this message I gave at a women's retreat to gain the fresh perspective you need to see Jesus in a new way! My FREE gift to you!
God can use the most random conversations to speak Truth in a really deep way.
I sat in the middle of a dark time in my life. Inbetween the tears and the fear, God brought my rambled mind back to a conversation I had with friends just a few days prior.
At dusk, we had been enjoying ice-cream together as my middle kiddo scurried around attempting to take pictures with my phone. The flash would blink its warning, then light up the entire area with its sudden exposure. My eyes just can’t prepare for events like that.
Sitting there in the flashes of photography, my friend shared with me a piece of knowledge he gained from his college photography class. Advanced camera skills can allow a user with plenty of patience and a tripod to capture a perfect photo in outside darkness, simply by using the natural outdoor illumination. The user simply mounts the camera, opens the shutter and allows ample time for the photo to develop. No editing required.
At the time I immediately remembered my high school graphic arts class taking pictures with coffee cans using the same technique. I can’t even begin to imagine what modern day artists are doing.
Sitting in my dark days later, God shared with me this same concept as He led me to Psalms 139 (the verse was familiar):
9 If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
12 even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you. Psalms 139:9-12 ESV
Our lives are like this advanced camera technique as the darkness is needed in order for God to develop us into who He created us to be. He simply wants us to sit, be patient and let His natural light do the work (He doesn’t need any light of our own).
Oh, the waiting y’all – that’s so hard.
The end picture may be amazing, but how do we get through the waiting?
You allow God time to speak and work on you, even if the darkness seems to linger. You look for Him in every little moment. You spend time alone in His Word and His promises. You seek out wise counsel. You put together a worship playlist. You take meetings off your calendar rather than adding more onto your schedule.
You simply wait for His picture to develop.
And when His picture finally catches your eyes, you will see why no editing will be required.
Because your night was simply His day. He used your mess for His message.
The waiting is hard, I know.
But God is working. Hold onto that sweet promise. He is working and fighting for you.
After all, it may be our night, but i will always be His light.
