I love Peter's experience of walking on the roaring sea with Jesus. But the thing is, Peter's story is often misunderstood. Do you have a step you need to take?
Listen to this message I gave at a women's retreat to gain the fresh perspective you need to see Jesus in a new way! My FREE gift to you!
My eldest son brushed back his blonde hair as his eyes meet mine. His lips curled as my smirk gained intensity.
“Your next word is grow… as in I want to grow strawberries but you boys would most likely take-out my garden. Grow” I gently stated.
Just a few minutes before this routine spelling practice test began, my son begged to use a pen. His pencil seemed too ordinary and he wanted to feel like a grown-up. Seeing my patience was running a bit thin with our 2 year-old and 4 year-old , the kindergartener got his way. He was doing marvelous until we hit that dreaded word. Let’s just say it didn’t grow on him very well.
“Mom this dumb pen doesn’t have an eraser!” he exclaimed.
“I’m sorry” I stated back in a truly empathetic voice. “Most pens don’t have erasers” I explained.
As distracted as I was from the conversation trying to make sure our back porch was still in one piece, my attention immediately snapped back when I heard his long silence.
Silence from my eldest is usually followed by a question. Oh’ not just any question, but usually a genius thought that really gets me scrambling for an answer.
He stopped trying to erase his work with his pen and asked:
“Why do kids have to grow-up and write everything important in pens?” he asked. “Grown-ups are allowed to make mistakes too, right?”
Who holds the pen in your life right now? You or God?
Do you own a pencil? What are you using to draw out your life dream?
You see, many of us believe God has a calling on our lives. Some of us have experienced moments of pure exhilaration as we step out in faith, out of our comfort zone and into the blank canvas of possibilities. Using the very gifts He has given us, we start drawing out a dream we believe He painted on our hearts. We know why this dream is so important to us. We know God has equipped us for such a time as this. We see the right opportunity, that amazingly God-ordained moment to make our big dream leap into reality…
…only to be met by hurdles, challenges, storms and colors that threatens our dream…I mean God’s dream from happening. That is, God’s dream from unfolding the way we believe it should.
But God gave us a dream. Why is this so hard? Can’t God make this easier?
If you hand over the pen and start-over with a dream in erasable ink.
First of all, dear dreamer, you were loved by Him long before you discovered His dream painted on your heart. You see, sometimes we start moving so fast, we fall in love with the dream and run right past the Dream Giver. We start to get frustrated when God slows us down as He gently corrects our human error. But we fight don’t we? No God, this is “my” dream and it was intended to look the way “I” planned.
It’s a great day when you awaken Gods dream for your life. It’s a fulfilling life when you realize He loved you way before He gave you a dream.[tweetthis]It’s a great day when you awaken Gods dream for your life. Even before I made the world, I loved you Bethany, and chose you in Christ to be holy and without fault in My eyes. I decided in advance to adopt you into My family by bringing you to Myself through Jesus Christ. This is what I wanted to do, and it gives Me great pleasure. (Ephesians 1:4, 5 NLT)
Secondly, dear dreamer, His dream cannot be fully perceived or even imagined by our mere human minds, no matter how passionately we try to understand His ways. His color pallets include shades we have yet to experience, strokes that seem beyond our comprehension, boundaries that stretch past our imagination filled with a Father’s love so deep it simply can only be handled revealing one piece at a time. Dear dreamer, doodle out the dream He has placed in your heart carefully, anxiously awaiting the moments His permanent fingerprints burst color out of nowhere – the end-results of hurdles and trials perhaps we never saw coming. But He is awakening His dream in us – a way to embrace the fullness of life!
Bethany, I will make My home in your heart as you trust in Me. Your roots will grow down into My love and keep you strong. And Bethany, you have the power to understand, as all My people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep My love is. May you experience My love, though it is too great to understand fully. Then Bethany you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from Me. Now Bethany, I AM able to do immeasurably more than all you ask or imagine, according to My power that is at work within you.(Ephesians 3:17-20 NLT)
A quick review, just in case you started daydreaming…
We draw His dreams out in our lives carefully with pencils because:
We follow the One Who loved us way before we discovered His painted dream on our hearts.
His dream for our lives cannot fully be drawn out by our mere human minds, so we draw slowly waiting for His bursts of color through unexpected obstacles and change of plans.
Dear Dreamer – I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.(Jeremiah 29:11). In all of your ways, dear dreamer, submit to Me and I will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:6 NIV).
Where do we start? Simply trust Him and allow the Artist to chisel away in your everyday life. One step, one moment and one stroke at a time. Pencils with erasers always allowed.
