Ready To Walk On Water?

I love Peter's experience of walking on the roaring sea with Jesus. But the thing is, Peter's story is often misunderstood. Do you have a step you need to take?

Listen to this message I gave at a women's retreat to gain the fresh perspective you need to see Jesus in a new way! My FREE gift to you!

Be My Blanket

Monday_Moments.JPGHello friends!

Just a heads-up, today my Facebook Page will be hosting a giveaway! If you have “Liked” my page, you can enter! And if you are a blog subscriber, get ready! I have a giveaway set to launch in December just for all of you amazing and loyal blog subscribers!

Now, for our “Monday Moment.”

As I went to lay our older two boys to sleep that dreaded evening, I encountered my all familiar gut-wrenching momma feeling that this bedtime routine was about to hit a hiccup. A major event would send our quiet, calming cuddle time into an all-out panic frenzy.

All over one, very significant and desperately needed item.

My 4 year-old has hardly missed a night since his first breath without the warming cocoon of his baby blanket. Upon his birth, I eagerly fed my dream of giving all my kids the same baby blanket, passing it down from one child to the next. But that never continued after the middle kiddo was born. He took a tight grip onto “little blankey” and never let go. He even cut the edges with scissors to claim his permanency upon his baby brother’s birth.

My happy tradition ended but a new friendship had formed between my little man and his little blanket.

So, that night when “little blankey” was missing from its usual spot, the entire family was up in alarm. We checked his usual hiding places –

Behind the living room chair…

In the pantry…

On the porch…

By the toilet…

In the toilet…

In the toy box…

In the garage…

In the fridge…

In his backpack…

…no little blankey. Tons of other treasures and loose change, but no blankets.

I calmly told my child that little blankey was going to remain in hiding for the night. I called off the massive search and rescue party. I turned off the bedroom lights.

Oh no, he wasn’t going down that easy.

Screaming. Tossing. Yelling for his little blankey…uncontrollable, tear-jerking madness.

Perfect, now what? Please mommy brain…please do something amazing about now!

I gently sat with him on the corner of his bed, ran my fingers through his hair and dried his tears on my shirt.

“Blankey is simply hiding tonight. But does blankey protect you?”

My little guy nodded frantically.

“Does God protect you more?” I asked.

“Oh yes!” he exclaimed.

“Well, can you trust God to protect you and little blankey tonight?” I asked.

Without a second of hesitation, my 4 year-old smiled, took a deep breath and a very long exhale. He was smiling, at peace with the reality that God had Him safe. Of course I had the kids join hands and pray together for our middle kiddo and for blankey’s safe return. The prayer included thanks for his blankey, thanks for the food, thanks for chocolate, the birds and mommy (well played child of mine).

And then the icing on the cake – both kids of mine fell right to sleep. No thrashing. No crying. Silence…and without blankey.

I am proud to let you know that blankey was discovered three days later in the very bottom of the boy’s laundry pail. Of course! The reunion was amazing and warmed my mommy heart.

I experienced God in a big way in the midst of my little guy’s challenge.

You see, as I sat on the edge of his bed that first night, I saw the tears fill his eyes when we both realized his security blanket wasn’t going to get him through this night. The only thing I knew I could offer him was God. I wasn’t sure if my kiddo truly would accept God’s protection over his blanket, but he did! In fact, the moment I even suggested that God can protect him, he melted in peace. He felt safe. He felt loved. At that moment, I realized my little guy had a huge heart for God…a faith that blew my understanding right out the window.

What is your blankey? Where do you place your security? I place my security in…

Our finances…

My husband’s happiness…

My health…

My husband’s health…my kids health…

My kids happiness…

My relationship with others…

Our safe house…

My husband’s job…

And suddenly, one day we try to make the journey realizing our security blankets are so incredibly fragile. Yet, we keep trusting them. But God wants us to trust in Him more than our eathly securities. He wants to to rest in Him.

If you haven’t been in this situation friend, get ready…it’s coming! Can you trust God to protect you when all else fails? Can He be the master security blanket in your house?

Trade in the world’s imperfect and temporary warmth and wrap yourself tightly in the security He provides.

May you find rest in the arms of your Abba friend.

You are My beloved and you will dwell in safety by Me; and I will cover you all the day long, and you will dwell between My shoulders. (Based on Deuteronomy 33:12 KJVA)

Time to trade in your security blanket for the warmth He promises. We can get go…even if it is one strand at a time.

I love your blog! I came over from the 31 Days Survivor’s group, and this is the second time I’ve been to your blog and the second time I’ve been deeply touched by your words.

I have a child who loves her blankie, too. I’m never going to look at that old pink blanket the same. May it always remind me of where my true security lies. Thanks for the reminder!

Ooohhhh…PINK!! I don’t have that color in my house! Enjoy every moment! Thanks so much for your note too!

I know God is my security too. I can’t trust in a job or anything wordly like I can in Jesus. He is my provider. Thanks for this great reminder of the truths of my Jehovah-jireh. He provides all I need.

You said it perfectly Mary! Thanks!

That is such a sweet story! My kids are grown now but my husband’s daughter, when she was 26 and about to get married, lost her treasured blankie in her luggage that was lost. Even at 26 it was tragic! My security blanket is control. As my anxiety level increases, my need to control increases. Until I reach out for my Savior who lovingly guides me back to reality. I am not in conrol at all.

Kari – WOW! I seriously don’t think my lil guys blanket will last that long…that’s amazing! My security is tucked in my need for control too. I hear you completely!

Lauren says November 10, 2014

This. Is. Good. Where is my security? What blanket am I holding on to? And when will I just realize that I have to let it go and just let God? Great post, my friend!!!

    Bethany says November 10, 2014

Well…thank you friend!! Means so much coming from you!!

Children give us such beautiful insight. I love how God’s peace came to him and you were able to make a stressful situation a learning situation. I hope I can be a great mom like you when my son is older. Sometimes I tend to freak out instead of relax. Thanks for sharing.
