I love Peter's experience of walking on the roaring sea with Jesus. But the thing is, Peter's story is often misunderstood. Do you have a step you need to take?
Listen to this message I gave at a women's retreat to gain the fresh perspective you need to see Jesus in a new way! My FREE gift to you!
Seriously, stop just for a second and allow this thought to run wild through your mind.
As this term was introduced to me, I immediately had a flashback running head on into my pregnancy days. Although it was impossible to see my feet over my growing stomach back then, I could see a full bowl of green beans (child #1) or pickles (child #2) or a glass of freshly crushed ice (child #3) and feel relief to my burning need for fulfillment deep inside. Pregnancy cravings a real! Momma’s out there, you get this!
Now that my three boys are older and moving around outside of my trying-to-get-back-into-shape mommy belly, they crave too. The phrase most uttered in our house is simply, “Mom, I’m so hungry!” And I’ve heard from other brave mom’s raising boys this craving for food that cycles every hour or so is just the beginning.
Sam’s Club, I feel we will be getting to know one another very well in my close future.
With food related issues pushed to the side, can I ask you a more personal question? In your life, what are you craving the most right now? What is that burning need that you need filled?
Don’t just answer the typical Sunday School way out either. “I crave God” isn’t what I’m looking for. What is one of the most central, burning need in your life that you are desperate to see filled?
Maybe you have tried hard to meet this craving in other ways and nothing seems to work.
Maybe you have honestly given-up on really ever being satisfied by the craving you have for love, significance, relationships, respect, safety, or community (just to name a few).
Maybe you stopped searching for a way to feed this craving so long ago, you no longer really feel anything inside.
Maybe, if you were honest, you don’t want to see life differently, or feel this emptiness of a craving not met because it breaks you to the core. Brokenness is a place few actually journey through because it is more than just the result of life circumstances. Brokenness is the humbling reality that you have a craving so deep that nothing in this world can possibly satisfy the longing inside of you. Brokenness requires a change of life leadership.
You want your craving filled?
Be willing to become broken. I’m actually pretty gifted at breaking things – just like my craving offsprings. However, becoming broken is not something I can do. In fact, it’s not something anyone of us can do. Think about it – how can you break yourself? Ready for a big dose of reality? There is nothing satan would like more than for us to believe we must keep it altogether. We actually do a great job at this on a daily basis. We hide our real cravings so deep inside because what would others think if they knew we couldn’t hold ourselves together? Think about it – when was the last time you honestly asked someone how they were doing and stuck around long enough to probe beneath the standard “ok” response? We don’t. We don’t expect others to share and when they do, we have no clue how to respond without offering self-help advice. Becoming broken admits that we can’t make it through this life without God. God is more than the glue that holds us together. God is the only cure for our craving and a relationship that changes us from the inside-out. Are you allowing Him to break you?
Be willing to admit your craving cannot be met by your own attempts at satisfaction. Yes, this is honestly where I get stuck, a lot. The truth is, if I admit I can’t provide for myself, I must really trust in God to meet this already empty and damaged part of my life. This means I must let go of my control. This requires faith and trust in God and essentially trusting God enough to allow others to walk into our lives through Christ and fill these needs. This takes time – God’s timing is always perfect. Pace yourself.
Be willing to let God see and explore your deepest cravings in life with you (this is a lifelong journey of sanctification. What in the world is sanctification? It is the amazing changing of us to be more like God. In other words, it is the wooing of God bringing you to Himself, transforming your craving into His message of providence and grace. So many times I struggle thinking I need God to take me to a certain goal or end point (make me feel loved, help me with my anger, teach me to slow down). But a true, authentic walk with God has no beginning (remember, He knew you way before you knew Him). And our journey with Him has no end if we are called His children and have accepted His salvation. So, let’s quit making this journey all about God meeting goals. Start by just giving Him your cravings and let Him take it from there – just make sure you record your journey!
Be willing to walk with others through this life of so many unique cravings that really lead back to one, amazing Abba Father. God created us to be in relationship with Him and others. How are you doing in this area? Is this a craving you would like Him to meet?
So, what are you really craving today? There is no need too great that God cannot handle. It’s time to embrace the beauty in our brokenness and crave meeting Him in our desperate place.
God, I have cravings.
Walk with me.
“I Am the God who made the world and everything in it. Since I Am Lord of heaven and earth, I do not live in man-made temples, and human hands can’t serve My needs—for Bethany, I have no needs. I give life and breath to everything, and I satisfy every need. Bethany, My purpose was for (you) the nations to seek after Me and perhaps feel (your) their way toward Me and find Me–though I am not far from (you, Bethany) any one of you. For Bethany, in Me you live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ (Acts of the Apostles 17:24, 25, 27, 28 NLT)
