I love Peter's experience of walking on the roaring sea with Jesus. But the thing is, Peter's story is often misunderstood. Do you have a step you need to take?
Listen to this message I gave at a women's retreat to gain the fresh perspective you need to see Jesus in a new way! My FREE gift to you!
I was completely alone, cruising down the highway in my empty minivan. The radio sent sound-waves of energy through my body. The wind rushed through my hair. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw empty booster seats. I am a mom of three young boys. I am a mom and yes, I was smiling.
Once in a while, moms need a break from the utter sticky-fingered chaos of their wonderful children. I was returning from my 2-hour child-free break. I felt recharged, ready and unstoppable.
No sooner had I thought, “I’m actually going to pickup the kids earlier than expected” did my plans change (this independent mindset tends to lead to this common outcome). The needle that marked the half-full line on my gas meter suddenly plunged to it’s death. No joke – it was as if the “F” decided to slam dunk the “E.” My eyes played volleyball for a few miles. One minute I was looking down at my helpless, unresponsive needle hugging the red empty line. Thew next mile I remembered to look back up at the road.
No sooner had I thought that perhaps I actually had gas did the dreaded warning light come on.
Great. Now that’s just ten shades of awesome right there. Who will rescue a stranded momma in a minivan that smells like cheerios? Maybe I could use a wet wipe to flag down a tow truck. Maybe…
Over 10 miles until the nearest gas station and I’m holding up the “E” on my gas gage. The sun began to set and I began praying, hard.
“God, I see grass and fields. There is no gas station in sight. Please push me home.”
“God please get me to anywhere near civilization – human population. Cows seriously do not count”
The needle reached a point where is stopped moving. Yes, it was officially at the lowest point possible. My hands gripped the steering wheel as I tried to make sure to tap lightly on the feared gas pedal.
Around 4 miles left to go until the nearest gas station, God broke through the silence of my fervent prayer for help. With sweat pouring down my face, I felt God say, “When you finally come to Me empty, I can fill you more than you dream possible. Bethany Trust Me.”
Yet, we think emptiness is such a wrong place to be in life. We are urged to be spiritually full and continually finding the time and place to meet with our Abba. If we can be with God full, we can be with Him empty too. It’s our choice to allow Him to fill us. But if we are never empty, when can we be filled? If we never need to be rescued what use is a Savior? Is everyone full all the time?
In fact, our spiritual needles can crash as quickly as Satan desires. To be frank, you would be kidding yourself if you believe the enemy plays nice. He not only knows your weakest points of impact but he carries the right ammunition to rip out your gas tank and dare to throw your life into the ditch. The enemy is afraid of you and he is fully aware of the strong hold God has on your life. Make Satan be afraid to mess with you.
Those who rely on God have the freedom to come to Him empty, broken, lost and alone. They are the very ones that cry, “Daddy, I can’t make it on my own. Please carry me Home.”
How is your life fulfillment gas tank today? Are you trying to make it to the next Sunday fill-up alone? Have you really allowed the God of the Universe to call you by your name, place you on His lap and call you His child? Is it time to quit buying the cheap stuff and fill-up on the Real source for life? God wants a true relationship, not just a QuickStop.
Start by admitting the empty areas of your life. Make a list. Complete a life assessment (yes, I offer this in my coaching packages – just ask!).
Continue by trusting God to fill you in only His way.
Be patient and wait for Him to work (the hardest part).
Do not try to fill-up yourself.
Accept no substitute.
Waiting with others who will remind you Who you belong to when you get distracted.
Don’t forget to celebrate what God is doing along the way.
Remind Satan to go back where he came from because you were bought at too high of a price to be told you are anything less.
You will always be His.
And by the way, yes, I made it to the gas station. I haven’t been the same since!
“Bethany, if you wait for Me, you will gain new strength; You will mount up with wings like eagles, Bethany, you will run and not get tired, you will walk and not become weary.” Isaiah 40:31
