I love Peter's experience of walking on the roaring sea with Jesus. But the thing is, Peter's story is often misunderstood. Do you have a step you need to take?
Listen to this message I gave at a women's retreat to gain the fresh perspective you need to see Jesus in a new way! My FREE gift to you!
Introducing “Resting In His Word Wednesday.” On Wednesdays I’ll be sharing tid-bits from my Bible study and simply special passages from God that just hit me at the perfect timing…His timing of course. Friend, I want you in His Word. Why? Because I’ve seen the life change that occurs after intentionally spending daily time in His promises. I am a wife and mom of three young boys. I wear several hats (at times way too many!). But I am His child before any other role. He keeps me grounded. His Words keep me sane. When His promises are in my mind, I can go through my day with clearity, sincerity, His wisdom and listening for His heartbeat.
No matter where you are in your Bible study journey, you are welcome here. May this serve as a starting point, a breath of fresh air or simply kindling of a fire in you that simply needs to refuel. Join with me as we walk through His promises together each Wednesday.
Get To Know Abba
In the book of Acts, Paul finds himself in Athens – a city completely scattered with Greek god statues. The culture, as you may recall from your history class, celebrated a god for literally everything imaginable in existence.
Can you imagine a life centered around keeping all of your god statues happy? Better yet, can you imagine actually trying to remember who controlled which area of your life that needed attention?
“Excuse me Zeus, I’m taking a flight tomorrow with my kids and I was wondering if you can keep the sky at peace so we can have an uneventful flight. Oh no, wait, maybe I should ask Hera because this is a family matter. Or wait, maybe get advice from Athena…”
Don’t stress too much… no worries! Paul quickly realized there was indeed a god these people had discovered just for this type of case situation. Good thing because in my world, this would be a daily occurance.
Introducing the “Unknown god.” Just in case they missed someone, somewhere, they wanted to make sure they covered their tracks carefully.
As Paul made his way through the city, I wonder if his heart skipped a beat when he noticed the idol for this unknown god. As he glanced over, he saw an opportunity to fill-in their unknown with a chance to be known by the very real and active God of the universe. The One that knew them before they were even conceived. As Paul started sharing his message, he was quickly escorted to the city officials (I love how God just perfectly set this up). With his heart racing, Paul shared about the very real God that so desperately wanted a relationship with those in Athens:
…for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about. “He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. “His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ (Acts of the Apostles 17:23-25, 27, 28 NLT)
Our God is not a statue built by mere human hands. Our Abba is living and active. He knows our needs and craves an ongoing, intimate relationship with us, His children. God wants more time with us than just our whispers on Sunday’s. He wants us to earnestly seek and feel our way to Him…that’s a daily, in your life, relational Abba Daddy.
No, we do not have an idol or idle god. Yet, sometimes I act like I do. I allow my life circumstances to whisper lies into the corners of my heart that I know can’t be from my Abba. Yet, I let them in and by doing so, I put my loving, relational God in idle mode. Even though He is so very close, I refuse to let Him in. I refuse to do this part of my life with Him.
That isn’t our God. That isn’t a fulfilling life.
The more we search and feel for our Abba, the more we get to know Him for Who He is known to be. And that knowledge comes straight from His Word. That knowing sends my lies fleeing from my heart. That knowing allows me to let Him hold me. That knowing allows my life to be worth living.
Quit living your life trying to get all of your circumstances to be perfected enough to please your unknown god.
Quit hiding your fears, failures and hurt from the known Abba that sent His own Son to take all of these known separations away.
Quit putting Him in idle mode.
Allow Him in. Sit on His lap. Rest in His Truth that He is here. He is holding you as you are and there is no greater place you can ever be.
